How to Choose the Best Jogging Stroller – Buyers Guide

Best Running Stroller

Now that you seen our best baby joggers, you need to know what features are important and why.

When you look at these specific features in your new jogging stroller, be sure to look at what is most important to your specific situation.

Nearly all jogging strollers have air-filled tires. It helps the suspension give a smoother ride for the child. You will also notice that jogging strollers only have three wheels instead of the four that typical strollers have.

If the jogging stroller doesn’t come with an air pump, you will want to get one so you can keep the tires inflated.

Most tires are basic; however, you will want to look for special features that the tires may have. The Thule jogging stroller featured below have impact cushioning tires.

Front Wheel

You have a choice when it comes to the front wheel design. If it is a fixed position, it is made purely to jog. If it is a swivel design, you will find it easily to maneuver when strolling.

There are also locking designs that allow you to lock it into a fixed position for jogging and then have it free to swivel when not. All of the jogging strollers featured on our list have a locking swivel design.

The suspension can be one of the most important features. If you think about it, without a good suspension, your child is going to get a pretty bumpy ride as you jog.

Look for a stroller that will provide a smooth, comfortable ride. Many of the ones featured here gave a ride so smooth that the younger children were even able to take a quick nap.

Adjustable Options

No baby will be the same, no parents will be the same, and no outing will be the same. There are some things that will need to be adjusted.

Handlebars, canopies, and even the seats are all features that can come with adjustable options. Some of these may not seem important now but if you think they will either now or in the future, be sure to look for a jogging stroller with lots of adjustable features.

Storage can be a key factor in the usability of a jogging stroller.

Especially with younger kids, you want to make sure you have snacks, maybe even a change of clothes or extra clothes if the temperature drops, or perhaps a place for your own things like a purse, keys, or cell phone.

Storage can be underneath the seat or even in a parent tray up by the handlebars. Some have a zippered pocket for valuables as well.

Wherever you think you may need storage, be sure to have it when you need it.

Whether shielding them from the bright sun or a few, unexpected raindrops, a canopy is important.

Canopies come in all shapes and sizes so depending on your needs and style preferences, you can find exactly what you are looking for. Do you need to be able to peek in to see your little one?

Do you want to have an SPF rating on the canopy? Vents? Should it be extra large? This may also be determined by the typical weather in your location.

Misc Considerations For Jogging Strollers

Running Brake & Parking Brake

Most jogging strollers are equipped with two types of brakes: a running brake and a parking brake. The running break helps you to maintain a certain speed while you are jogging or even walking. This is a great feature if you plan on a jog a that takes you down hills.

The parking brake will keep the jogging stroller from moving at all if you were to sit down on a bench in a park, or if you stop to talk to someone you meet along your route.

Wrist Strap

The jogging stroller should always be equipped with a wrist strap. Anytime it is moving, the strap should be securely affixed to your wrist. Even if you don’t expect to be going downhill at all, something may come up where it’s necessary. A wrist strap helps you to keep control of the jogging stroller while going downhill.

Folding Design

It’s important to choose a jogging stroller that can fold down to a more compact size for travel. This is for many reasons. If you want to take the jogging stroller with you in your vehicle to a place not near your home to jog, it would need to fit in the back of your vehicle, whether you have a car or SUV.

It should also be easily foldable if you travel and need to take it with you. Traveling by train or plane, and even by vehicle, is much easier if a jogging stroller is easily folded down to a compact size.

Why Use a Jogging Stroller?

If you’re still not sure whether a jogging stroller is right for you and your child or children, we’ve listed some of the top benefits. With so many benefits of getting out of the house with a jogging stroller, how can you not want to strap them in, lace up your running shoes, and go for a jog?

Bonding Time

After you’ve been at work all day, for most days of the week, the last thing you want to do is go out for a jog and miss out on precious time with your kiddo. A jogging stroller allows you to bring him or her with you. You both get the benefit of some bonding time out of the house.

Arm Workout

As you steer the jogging stroller up and down and around corners, you’re using your arms. While you may not see visual benefits, you may realize that over the course of a few weeks it gets easier to push the jogging stroller. You may even find that you have more strength in your arms during other activities as well.

Enjoying the Neighborhood

Being out and about in your neighborhood can be beneficial to both you and your little one. You can stop to chat with somebody you meet along the way, you can jog to someone’s house for a visit ,or you may even learn about activities in the neighborhood you may not have known about otherwise. Is a neighbor moving, having a new baby, or remodeling? Is there a fair or block party coming up?

More Resistance

The weight of the jogging stroller plus your kid, or even two kids, adds a lot of resistance to your jog that you wouldn’t have gotten if you just went on a run by yourself. This means that if you’re trying to work off the baby weight or tone up your body, you can see results much faster using a jogging stroller.

Fresh Air for You & Baby

Just as much as you benefit from fresh air while on a jog, your baby does too. One of the biggest benefits of getting fresh air regularly is that your body is exposed to more oxygen-rich air.

That oxygen you breathe while outdoors helps your body to keep white blood cells healthy which can help both you and baby fight off illness much easier. It’s very important to help your baby in any way possible to build a healthy immune system, especially while so young.

FAQs About Jogging Strollers

If you’ve never bought a jogging stroller before you may have some questions. Here are some of the Frequently Asked Questions by parents looking for a jogging stroller for their family.

Q: Will my regular stroller handle my jogging?

A: Jogging strollers have many benefits over typical strollers if you will be using it for jogging or running. Even if you just go for a lot of walks.

Jogging strollers are meant for a more active lifestyle. They give a smoother ride for baby when going a bit faster, they are easier to move around, and there are safety features built into the stroller when out and about more often.

Q: How old does my baby need to be before I put them in a jogging stroller?

A: Sometimes this is dependent on the manufacturer of the jogging stroller. If the stroller is capable of carrying a car seat, then you can obviously use a jogging stroller when they are much younger.

If you plan on using a jogging stroller without the car seat attachment, it is important that the baby not need head support. The mom, if she is the one using the stroller, should also be well rested after the birth.

Q: Should I choose a jogging stroller with a 5-point harness or a seatbelt?

A:  A 5-point harness is typically used in a jogging stroller when the child is very young. This type of harness keeps them secured in the seat even if they are moving around, which can happen if they become upset. It’s much safer to use a 5-point harness for a child under the age of 3.

If your child is a little older and is already used to going with you on jogs, a simple safety belt may be all that’s necessary. Many jogging strollers come with the ability to switch from a 5-point harness to a safety belt very easily

Q: What if the stroller I want doesn’t have all the features I want?

A:  It is fairly easy to “upgrade”  certain features of your jogging stroller. For example, if the handlebar is made out of rough plastic and gets uncomfortable after a long jog, there is tape available that you can wrap your handlebar in to make it much smoother and comfortable.

If the seat is not padded enough for the rider, it’s possible to safely add padding. It’s important not to use blankets and extra clothing as they can reduce the safety of the seat, but there are padded liners available that can add the right amount of padding you need to make it more comfortable for them.

Q: What are the most common safety features?

A: Most jogging strollers are equipped with seat belts to secure the child into the stroller, canopies to shade from sun or protect from inclement weather, suspension systems to give a smoother ride.

Sometimes leashes or hand brakes to aid in slowing down, especially when going downhill. There also may be other safety features built into specific models based on the manufacturer.

Q: Can I benefit from a jogging stroller even if I don’t jog or run?

A: Jogging strollers can hold older children, which makes it beneficial if you need to transport a larger or older child, or even perhaps a younger and an older child and want to use a double seater.

They are bulkier than regular strollers but significantly sturdier so tend to last much longer, especially since they are built with an active lifestyle in mind.

Q: Do I still need a regular stroller if I have a jogging stroller?

A: If you don’t want to use your jogging stroller everywhere you go, based on the bulk of it, then you may want to invest in a regular stroller as well.

However, if you want to keep it to one stroller and don’t mind the bulk of traveling with a jogging stroller, there’s no reason why you can’t use the jogging stroller exclusively.

Jogging Stroller Tips

If you’ve never used a jogging stroller before, we have some handy tips to make it a lot easier for you both you and your kiddo or kiddos.

Tip #1: Stick to Quiet Neighborhoods

Especially when you first start using your jogging stroller, you want to keep to quiet roads as much as possible. If your child is younger, this can help them adjust to the new routine of your jogging as well.

It will also be a bit easier for you if you jog in the road off to the side, if it is legal and there is room, instead of on the sidewalk due to the constant bumps of the sidewalk. Walking paths at parks are great places to get started with a jogging stroller.

Tip #2: Don’t Push Yourself

Jogging strollers are heavier than regular strollers and you may underestimate this when you first start. Keep to shorter walks or jogs, don’t attempt a lot of big hills, and don’t go really far from home until you know you will be able to handle all that exercise.

You will need to ease your way into so much activity, and so will your baby.

Tip #3: Plan Your Jogging Time Around Naps and Meals

If baby starts getting fussy because it is time for a meal, then they aren’t going to be very happy waiting to get home for that and you aren’t going to be very happy having to listen to it or having to stop somewhere to feed them.

It is important to plan all jogs or walks around meal times. Until you know they are comfortable falling asleep in the jogging stroller, nap times should be at home as well.

Tip #4: Don’t Use Headphones

You need to be able to pay attention to both the traffic and people around you as well as to your baby. Wearing headphones is not only a distraction but it keeps you from being able to hear the noises and voices around you.

Playing music on a speaker from the parent tray or even built-in speakers like in the Baby Trend Expedition we featured works well if you like to listen to music, but make sure it is low enough that you can still pay attention.

Tip #5: Don’t Use Blankets

Blankets that are wrapped around your child, or that your child can pull off themselves, can easily get wrapped around the front tire of a jogging stroller.

This is dangerous, so it is important to bundle up baby well enough to where they won’t need a blanket and bring an extra jacket just in case the temperature drops. But leave the blankets at home.

Tip #6: Choose the Right Sized Tire with the Right Tread

The front tires of a jogging stroller typically come in three sizes:

  • A 12-inch diameter tire Is typically used on sidewalks, pavements, and even in shopping centers. If you don’t plan on taking the stroller down dirt paths, even the ones in parks, or on rough concrete, this is the right choice.
  • A jogging stroller with a 16-inch diameter wheel is best for light off-road use, like dirt paths, but it can also stand up to faster jogging and going up and down sidewalk curbs.
  • A 20-inch diameter front tire can handle nearly everything you expect to put it through.

One last note on tire sizing:

While it may be tempting to automatically choose a 20-inch diameter front tire, note that this will also make it more difficult to transport if you have to fit it into the trunk of a car or when gate-checking it for a flight. It also adds a bit more weight. It’s best to go with the size that you expect you’ll need and not any larger, so it is as easy as possible for you to transport and even store.

Ready to Jog with Your Baby?

Jogging strollers make it much easier to get out and about, leading an active lifestyle with your kids. Stay fit and healthy by walking, jogging, or running with a jogging stroller and let your kid or kids get out and about as well. No reason not to take them with you!
