Winter & Safety Pool Covers Reviews
- Sizes: 7 size options
- Material: 2-ply high-scrim mesh, brass anchors, stainless steel springs
- Features: 4000-pound break weight, drill and tamp anchoring system, includes installation tools
This cover uses a special drill and tamp anchor system to efficiently secure the cover over the pool. This is easily the safest choice you can get for inground swimming pool covers.
The anchors used are incredibly safe and secure and the cover itself has a break weight of over 4000 pounds.
This is a cover that your whole family could literally go stand on safely. It is the perfect way to guarantee there are no pool accidents if your child or even your pet manages to get to the pool alone for a moment.
A tragic accident takes almost no time at all to happen and can happen to anyone. That’s why pool safety is so desperately important. The anchor system of this cover is relatively simple and highly efficient.
The brass anchors permanently secure into the concrete around your pool. When your cover is not in use, the anchors will sit recessed into the ground to keep them out of the way.
When in use, the cover sits flush against the top of the pool. This efficiently prevents any children or pets from accidentally making their way into the pool.
The cover itself is made of a very strong 2-ply mesh. The mesh pool cover is excellent as a safety cover as well as a winter cover. It is plenty strong enough to hold tons of weight, but it also lets water seep through.
This is important because it prevents water from building up on top of the cover making it much easier for you to get your pool ready for swimming again when the seasons change.
Plus, it still prevents dirt and debris from making their way into the pool. Multi-seamed stitching and wear strips help to keep the cover working great and completely safe for years to come.
This option is for a 16′ x 32′ pool but actually measures at 18’ x 34’ to give you a nice amount of overhang on all sides.
This Blue Wave cover is available in 6 other sizes if you need something other than the 16′ x 32′ option. It even comes in your choice of blue or green!
Of course, if you want the best safety pool cover, you will have to pay for it. This option is our most expensive pool cover choice, but it is definitely worth the cost if it fits your budget!
- Sizes: 8 size options
- Material: Tight polypropylene mesh, brass anchors, stainless steel springs
- Features: Includes 4’ x 8’ center end step covering, triple stitching with double straps
It is a very secure and safe cover that keeps pets and children out of harm’s way. It also does a great job of keeping debris out of the pool.
Just like the last cover, it is made from a very strong polypropylene mesh material. This lets the water through to avoid any build up on top of the cover.
Triple stitching and double straps all throughout the design of the cover help guarantee durability that will allow the cover to continue working efficiently for many years. The cover also blocks the sun’s rays, which prevents evaporation.
This is great because it saves you on water refilling as well as on pool chemicals. The anchoring system is pretty much identical to that of the Blue Wave pick above.
It is a drill and tamp system with brass anchors that recess into the ground when the cover is not being used. One of the big differences that you will find with this cover is that it has an extended section of the cover that accommodates center-position steps on the end of the pool.
So, if your pool has a set of center steps that protrude from the end of the pool, this is a perfect choice! It is important to cover all sections of your pool for proper protection of your pool and safety of those around your pool.
The steps section on this cover is 4’ x 8’. The entire thing is for a pool sized 16’ x 32’, but you can choose it with the center step section in 2 different sizes as well.
You will also have the option of getting the cover in 5 other sizes that don’t include the center step section in case you don’t need it. This is certainly an excellent choice that is a little bit less expensive than our first Blue Wave pick.
- Sizes: 1 size (16’ x 32’)
- Material: 2-ply tight mesh material, brass anchors, stainless steel springs
- Features: Drill and tamp anchoring system, includes installation tools, multi-seamed stitching
It is made with the tight-weave 2-ply mesh material that allows water to go through it while simultaneously blocking out unwanted dirt and debris from the pool.
The fabric sections on this cover are a bit larger than our first two picks. This means fewer seams, which give it a little less structure comparatively.
It also means a little bit of reduced strength compared to what you get with Blue Wave and Happybuy, but still plenty of strength for what you actually need.
This still does a great job as a safety cover protecting children and pets from the dangers of drowning. It features the same tamp and drill anchor system with brass anchors and stainless steel springs.
The anchors recess into the ground when not being used for increased safety and convenience. Multi-seamed stitching also helps to increase safety and durability alongside special technologies like anti-wear strips along the bottom of the cover.
This cover comes in just the popular 16’ x 32’ size, so it will only work if that is the size you actually need.
Just like with the Blue Wave pick, though, you can choose between blue and green for the color of the cover. It is a great more affordable choice for those looking for a really excellent safety and winter pool cover.
- Sizes: 11 sizes available
- Material: Solid polyethylene
- Features: Solid design doesn’t allow anything into the pool, 5 feet of overlap for length and width, 8-year warranty
If your pool is properly fenced and you are absolutely certain that no children or at-risk pets will be able to access the pool, just getting a regular winter pool cover should be perfectly fine.
Unlike the first few covers we went over; this winter pool cover is solid rather than being mesh. This means that nothing will be able to go through your cover and get into your pool – including water.
The only downfall here is that you are likely to need to remove water from on top of your pool cover before you actually remove it in the spring or summer.
This cover will not permanently install into the concrete around your pool like the first few safety covers above. Instead, you simply lay it over the water of your pool.
A 5-foot overlap in terms of length and width allow you plenty of room to weigh down the cover on the perimeter of the pool. It is recommended to use specially designed water tubes to do this.
There are loops along this cover every 4 feet to let you easily add the water tubes to the cover.
This cover requires 12 of the water tubes to work best. Keep in mind, these will need to be purchased separately from the cover. If you prefer not to use the water tubes, you can technically use whatever you want to weigh down the cover.
Just keep in mind that other things may not work as efficiently. If you don’t need a safety cover for your pool and are just strictly looking for a good winter pool cover, this is definitely a perfect budget option that impressively comes in under $50.
- Sizes: Over a dozen sizes available
- Material: Solid polyethylene
- Features: 5 feet of overlap for width and length, black underside resistant to algae growth, 10-year warranty
This option is more versatile with tons of options available in terms of scrim, color, and size. This particular one is for a 16′ x 32′ pool for a good comparison with all of our other picks that are also for that same size.
The 8 x 8 scrim, which simply refers to the number of threads per square inch, is nice and strong but still highly affordable and relatively lightweight.
Also, like the Blue Wave winter pool cover above, this cover does not permanently install into the concrete around your pool. As with the Blue Wave, it is recommended to use water tubes to weigh the cover down.
There are loops in the edges of the cover every 4 feet where you can place the water tubes. These will need to be bought separately as well. This 16’ x 32’ cover requires 12 of the tubes.
If you choose the cover in one of the other more than a dozen sizes, you will need a different number of water tubes.
This cover has a slightly longer warranty than the Blue Wave pick at 10 years opposed to Blue Wave’s 8. It is highly UV-resistant for longer durability even in direct sunlight.
The black underside of the cover prevents algae growth to help guarantee you still have a nice and clean pool come spring and summer time. This cover is a little more expensive, but still highly affordable with great quality and features!

Choosing the Best Pool Cover
Pool covers can have all sorts of purposes and it is very important to find the right one for your specific needs. Pool covers are very different from one another.
They have a lot of varying features that will help you determine what you specifically need. Here we will talk about those different features to help you understand the importance of different options you get with different covers.
Read on to help figure out what you should look for in the perfect pool cover for your needs!

- Pool Cover Buyer’s Tips
How a pool cover installs is the first of many important features to consider when you go to make your purchase. There are two main ways that winter and/or safety pool covers will install on an inground pool.
Some options will just lay over your pool and then need to be weighted down around the perimeter of the pool. These are usually more affordable and super easy to install.
However, they aren’t as secure and take a lot more work in the long run for each time you remove it and then put it back and so on. The other option you will have is a cover with a drill and tamp system. This basically means that you will install anchors permanently into the concrete around your pool.
The anchors will sit recessed into the concrete as to be out of the way when the cover isn’t being used. When you do need to use the cover, you will pull the anchors up slightly and hook the cover’s straps to it.
They feature springs to give you a tight and secure install. The initial install of the anchors is a lot more work than the weighted pool covers.
However, it makes it so much faster and easier to put the cover on and then remove it each time you need to.
That covers the basics of installation, but which installation is right for you will also tie in with other factors that you can read more about below.
Obviously, the size of the cover is one of the most important things you need to look at when choosing a cover for your pool. If the cover isn’t the right size, you may not even be able to use it at all.
Pool covers are sized according to the size pool they are designed for, but they aren’t actually the exact size of the pool.
Basically, a 16’ x 32’ pool cover is made for a 16’ x 32’ pool but doesn’t actually measure at 16′ x 32′. Pool covers have an overhang that allows them to cover the entire pool and then go past the edges a bit.
The overhang varies on different covers usually up to around 5 feet in each direction.
So, a 16’ x 32’ pool cover is likely to actually measure somewhere between that and 21’ x 37’. Remember that you must include unusual shaping in your measurements.
If your pool is irregularly shaped or includes stairs that jut out from the pool, measure the longest and widest part of the pool for your pool size. Size up rather than down if you are in-between sizes.
Solid versus Mesh
Getting a solid pool cover or a mesh pool cover has a lot to do with maintenance and convenience. Both solid and mesh pool covers will keep out dirt and debris from your pool.
The difference is that mesh pool covers allow water to seep through into the pool while solid covers do not.
Solid covers will keep everything out of your pool efficiently, but mesh covers take less maintenance and are easier to deal with come spring.
Since the water can’t build up on top of the cover, you will never have to pump water off the cover before removing it.
We are talking about winter and safety covers, so safety is definitely going to an important and relevant factor in your decision. Safety ties in strongly with installation.
Pool covers that are anchored into the ground will obviously be much safer than weighted versions that are best used as just a winter pool cover.
Anchored covers can actually hold a large amount of weight preventing children or pets from being able to fall in the pool even if they actually walk on it.
This is definitely what you will want if you don’t have proper fencing around your pool or if you have children that live in or visit your home.
Safety for people and pets is important, but you want to protect your pool too, of course! Different covers have different protective features for your pool.
Any good pool cover should efficiently keep debris out of your pool. Some also keep water out while others do not; this is more about personal preference than anything.
Beyond that, consider options like UV-resistance and a black underside. Covers that block the sun’s rays will prevent evaporation to help reduce your pool maintenance costs.
Black undersides on covers help to inhibit the growth of algae to help keep your pool nice and clean.
How durable your pool cover is has a lot to do with how it is constructed. Look for things like multiple seams and double or even triple stitching.
These are important factors that help keep the covers safe and efficient while increasing their durability and therefore their longevity.
You can get a pretty good idea on what to expect from your pool cover in terms of durability by looking at the warranty on it. The longer the warranty, the more the company believes in their product’s durability and quality.
Last but certainly not least, you will need to determine what you want to and are able to pay for your pool cover. If you need a weight-baring option for safety purposes, you will have to pay more.
Even so, there is a wide variety of pricing amongst these safety pool covers.
You need to decide if you want to pay top dollar and have a cover that lasts you a very long time or if you would rather save some money but possibly have to replace the cover a little sooner.
Covers that are just weighted down on top of the pool are much more affordable than weight-bearing covers and can be an excellent choice for someone on a particularly tight budget as long as there are other safety measures in place for their pool.
