How to Choose the Best Tree Swing – Buying Guide

best outdoor swing
The RedSwing Saucer Tree Swing.

Now we’ve taken you through the best tree swings for adults and children alike.

Strangely enough, this might make coming to a decision even harder – how do you choose between so many promising options?

We’ve written up this handy buyers guide to help lead you through the selection process. By the time you’re done, you should have little doubts about the model for you!

Weight Capacity

If you don’t check the weight capacity of your tree swing, you could run into myriad problems and potentially suffer serious injuries.

This is especially important because swings are in constant motion, so if they aren’t stable, or are poorly installed, the combined gravity and velocity can result in a nasty accident.

As a general rule, you should allow for an extra 30 – 40 pounds above your weight, just to be safe.

This will ensure the integrity of your swing – if you cut it too close, you will strain the ropes and support systems of the product, compromising its longevity.

Be sure that you also take into consideration the capacity of the tree you choose to hang your swing on!

Mature hardwoods like oak, sycamore and beech are sturdy and can handle large loads, making them great candidates for swings.

On the other hand, avoid trees which split easily, like willow or poplar – these will not be able to support heavy weights for extended time.

Look for a limb that doesn’t sit at a sharp angle – this will make the swing harder to place, and risk the straps slipping off the branch.

Most importantly, the branch must be at least eight inches thick at its shortest diameter, and free of defects like cracks or molding spots.

On a size-related note, you should also factor in the arc of your swing, leaving at least 10 inches for clearance on either side.

This will eliminate the risk of hitting surrounding structures, furniture, or greenery when in use.

Construction / Materials

Remember that your tree swing lives outside. This means it must be designed to withstand the natural elements of heat, wind, rain and moisture on top of constant use.

With that in mind, check for models made from water, UV, and mold resistant materials.

The best all-weather resistant fabrics are typically synthetic, like textilene and high density polyethylene plastic.

You should also make sure you choose a swing with a sturdy frame for enhanced support! Most of the options on our list use steel or metallic frames which are durable and can support vigorous use.

Though the frame must be sturdy, the seat should be comfortable. Think about how it will feel to sit on your swing for an extended period of time – you don’t want to end up with a throbbing tailbone.

With that said, you should look for a seat with significant padding and cushion for your body. Your back and butt will thank you later!

The quality of your swing will inevitably degrade after an extended period of time outdoors, so it is wise to inspect it every couple of weeks!

Be sure to check for frayed ropes or straps, cracks in the seats, and weakening of the tree branch holding it up.

Ideally, you want to check every month so you can replace pieces when needed – don’t wait for your swing to start malfunctioning before you evaluate it for imperfections.

As with any product, maintenance is key!

FAQs About Tree Swings

Q: How do you attach a swing to a tree?

  1. Look for a healthy tree with no signs of disease, fungus or rot.
  2. The limb you should have the swing from should be pretty horizontal, it doesn’t have to be perfectly horizontal. The branch should be at least 8″ diameter to provide enough strength.
  3. Look for a branch that is a minimum of 10′ off the ground to provide enough arc for the swing.
  4. When attaching the ropes to the branch keep them as close as possible to the tree without getting close enough that you will cloide with the tree when swinging.
  5. Be sure the “landing zone” for getting off the swing is free of rocks, roots or other hazards.

How to: Hang a ROPE SWING - video

Q: How wide should my swing seat be?

A: This just depends on the size of whoever will be using the swing.

Generally, your seat should be at least 17 inches long by 8 inches wide by 1 inch deep.

Q: Is my tree strong enough for a swing?

A: When determining whether your tree can support a swing, the general rule of thumb is to find a branch that is at least 8 inches in diameter.

Also check for cracks and splits in the trunk, dead or hanging branches, and decaying spots. If you cover this checklist, you shouldn’t run into problems!

Q: Can you hang a swing between 2 trees?

A: Yes – but unless the 2 branches are perfectly level, you’ll have to install a beam between the 2 trees, then hang the swing on the beam.

Also remember that each branch must be at least 8 inches in diameter.

Tips For Choosing A Tree Swing

#1: Check for a strong tree!

Be absolutely sure that the branch you choose has at least an 8 inch diameter.

Also confirm that your tree isn’t decaying, splitting, or molding. The strength of tree is just as important as the weight capacity of the swing itself.

#2: Leave adequate space.

Be sure to leave at least 10 inches of clearance on either side of your swing.

Remember that tree swings are moving objects with quite a bit of speed and weight.

If you don’t consider the arc of swing and leave adequate room for it, you could end up knocking into furniture and damaging something!

#3: Maintenance is key!

As with all products, maintenance is key. Inspect your swing every month to check for weak spots, cracks in the seat, or fraying ropes.

If you wait too long to inspect and continue putting weight on a weakened swing, you could end up in a dangerous accident.

Now that you know all about how to select a good tree swing, its finally time to decide which model you’ll be taking home.

No matter what you choose, know that you’ll be getting one of the best options on the market today.
