Made with UV-and-water-resistant polyester as well as a powder-coated aluminum frame, you can rest assured this retractable patio awning will hold up in the elements with ease.

Aluminum is tough yet very lightweight, with the entire unit weighing just 36.5 pounds. It’s 98×80 inches, which is perfect for providing enough shade to cover a patio table or barbecue area.

We really liked it for balconies, as it’s not all that long and gives an elegant twist to any location. The easy crank handle is what lets you retract or extend the design, with a built-in reel and crank handle.

This makes it simple to where you don’t have to struggle with it.

Unfortunately, there’s only one color to choose from, which is a tan shade. However, it does go with just about any kind of décor and colors you may already have.

As it is UV-resistant, you can count on the color staying bright and rich.

Coming in 6 different colors and patterns, you can choose from Black, Brick Red with Sand Beige Stripes, Ocean Blue with Sand Beige Stripes, and a few more.

As each one is made with 100% Solution Dyed Acrylic Canvas, you can expect them to not fade in the sun. Not only that, but they’re also mold-and-mildew-resistant as the weave is made to release heat.

This helps to ensure that it’s not holding heat in, which can also make your shaded area hotter, which is what you don’t want!

To operate the porch awning, you’ll use pitch loops and the crank loop. This lets you extend or retract the awning, as well as adjust the pitch to block the sun throughout various times of the day!

The frame is comprised of both steel and aluminum, which is just about the toughest combo you can get at this affordable price.

Not only that, but it’s resistant against corrosion, so you can use it in all kinds of weather conditions. However, you should count on this model being notably heavier, weighing about 3x what the last product does!

With a 5-year manufacturer warranty, you can purchase with confidence, knowing that you’ll be covered if it doesn’t function 100% perfectly.

AECOJOY Manual Patio Deck Retractable Sun Shade at a Glance:

  • Size: 10 ft x 8 ft, 8.2 ft x 6.5 ft

If you are looking for a great retractable awning for different surfaces such as siding or stucco, the AECOJOY Manual Awning Canopy may be for you.

The sunshade patio cover comes with all the hardware needed for attaching to a concrete surface, so you won’t need to go out and spend any extra time or money getting them.

Featuring a long, 4’ hand crank, it’s easy to maneuver and opens the awning smoothly, with whisper-quiet operation.

Whenever you need to adjust it as the day passes, you can do so at a moment’s notice without wrestling with it.

While it’s undoubtedly well-made, we do have to let you know that this porch awning is only to be used in sunny/good weather conditions.

If you notice that it’s begun to rain or there are heavy winds forming, you should retract it as soon as possible.

Don’t be mistaken, though; the model is still quite durable. Made up of both aluminum and steel, the frame will easily last you for years.

The fabric consists of thick, polyester fabrics which feature a PU waterproof coating, much like with the previous product.

This awning also only comes in two colors – tan & green – so there isn’t much versatility in that aspect. Aside from that, however, this is a high performer you don’t want to skip over.

ALEKO Retractable Patio Awning

ALEKO Retractable Patio Awning at a Glance:

The 100% UV-and-water-resistant polyester fabric is made to completely shield you and others from the sun. You can also use the hand crank to extend or retract it.

It includes wall-mounting brackets made for quick and painless installation. This is definitely one of the best budget patio awnings out there and comes with a one-year warranty.

While there are obviously longer warranties on other products we’ve covered, one year is still quite good.

Diensweek Patio Manual Retractable Awning at a Glance:

  • Size: 8 ft x7 ft – 15 ft x 10 ft (6 sizes available)
  • Frame: Aluminum shoulders, galvanized steel roller tube
  • Shade: PU coated Polyester

If you’re counting on one of the best outdoor awnings for your entertainment space. This is a manual retractable awning model that is easy to operate.

What’s great about these, is that you never have to rely on power, and you don’t have to spend extra money like you would with a motorized model or worry about electrical wiring.

This is another model we felt worked perfectly when installed above windows and doors, protecting you from the elements while helping keep your indoors cool on scorching days.

The multi-surface installation method lets you connect the awning to an array of different surfaces such as siding and stucco.

For that reason, it’s perfect for both home use, and for use at a café or restaurant to keep guests shielded while enjoying beverages and food.

If you are planning on mounting it to wood-framed homes, know that you will have to purchase the mounting screws separately.

Comprised of thick polyester fabrics with a PU waterproof coating, you can easily use this model in various types of weather conditions.

The aluminum/steel frame is extremely strong and long-lasting, while remaining rust-proof so wet weather won’t damage it.

This awning also comes in three colors – Beige, Green & White Stripes and Navy so one of them should match your home or business.

Outsunny Retractable Patio Sun Shade Awning at a Glance:

  • Size: 13 ft x 8 ft

Are you on a budget but still want one of the best outdoor awnings currently out there? Then check out the Outsunny Manual Retractable Patio Sun Shade Awning.

The cover is made with polyester fabric, complete with a PU waterproof coating to ensure it holds up well in both the sun and the rain.

As it’s anti-UV, it’s not going to fade, even in the blaring sun’s rays. The frame is made with thick aluminum and steel to further ensure durability even in heavy winds and extreme temperatures.

While it is very tough, it’s relatively lightweight, weighing just over 50 pounds.

While you can definitely use them on patios and porches, we found they were ideal to use above windows and doors due to the more narrow design.

Unfortunately, you just get to choose from one color option – tan. We would like to see some more colors added in the future to give everyone more options.

TANG Sunshades Depot Retractable Slide at a Glance:

  • Size: 3 ft x 10 ft to 7 ft x 40 ft (many sizes available)
  • Frame: Wire Cables
  • PU coated Polyester
  • Colors: 2, Beige & Brown
  • Retraction: Manual slide

Last on our guide, is the TANG Sunshades Depot Retractable Slide, which you’ll notice is quite a bit different from our previous designs in many ways.

First off, you’ll see that it doesn’t include a sturdy metal frame like every other one does, but rather thin wire cables which the canopy awnings hang from.

These awnings are probably the most attractive ones we’ve been able to use, sliding easily on the wire to adjust perfectly to your liking and blocking out up to 90% of the sun’s rays.

Coming in either Beige or Black, you can rest assured either one will go with any type of décor you have going on. Simply move them by pulling them back when you don’t need shade, or if rain and wind begins.

The breathable fabric is much more lightweight than what the others have, which allows light drizzly rain and breezes to pass through so you don’t have to deal with standing water hanging out on the fabric.

The supporting wire cables and pad eyes make them easy to connect to an already-existing pergola or a new free-standing frame structure – whatever you prefer best.

As it’s so lightweight and thin, installation is very quick and easy and can be placed just about anywhere.

How to Choose the Best Retractable Awning – Buying Guide

best outdoor awnings
TANG Sunshades Depot Retractable Slide

Knowing about the best retractable awnings is great, but it’s not going to be of much help to you if you don’t know which one is the best for your situation.

We understand that, and don’t want to leave you hanging, so we’ve decided to write up the comprehensive buying guide, below. By the end of it, you should know exactly which one is the perfect product for you and your needs.

First, you need to figure out where you’re going to place your new retractable awning. Know that not every single model is going to work with wood-framed homes, for example, and some won’t work with stucco or cement. Make sure the one you have in mind works with the building you want to place it on, or you may have to send it back and get another!

This relates directly to our last point, relating to where you’re going to be attaching the awning. For example, if you’re only going to be using it for a window, then you’re not going to get the same size as you would for a large porch or patio.

If you can, it would be ideal to measure the area you’re looking to cover and protect from the elements. Try to pick a model just slightly larger than the area you have in mind.

This will help maximize your space’s potential, and also make installation easier. If you select one that’s too small, you may not be able to connect it to the proper anchor points.

The material of the awning is the next most important factor when making your selection. As it’s going to be exposed to harsh elements like the sun and possibly wind and rain, it needs to be extra-tough.

As it’s almost a given that the frame is going to be made of corrosion-proof aluminum and steel, let’s talk about the material of the canopy.

Canvas is viewed as the “traditional” material that the canopy of awnings are made out of, and is also the only natural fiber commonly used.

Canvas is usually comprised of cotton or linen, and occasionally hemp. It’s durable when used indoors, but it is quite a bit vulnerable when you place it out in the elements where it’s repeatedly exposed to sunlight and moisture.

However, it has the most tensile strength of most materials, aside from aluminum. However, it’s much more flexible, making it a great option. The biggest downside of canvas is that it’s a bit prone to mildew and UV deterioration.

PVC Is, in contrast to canvas, a synthetic material which is probably our least favorite material due to how quickly it breaks down. In addition to that, it lacks the tensile strength other materials have, making it vulnerable to rips and tears.

As it’s a type of plastic, it is pretty flexible and also waterproof. However, if you subject it to enough moisture, it’s going to eventually retain the water. The good thing is that it’s naturally mildew-resistant.

This is quite possibly the most commonly used material in patio awnings. One reason why it’s so popular is because it’s quite inexpensive, which is great for both the manufacturers and consumers, alike.

As they’re so durable, you’ll save even more money by not having to purchase a replacement! As it’s naturally a hydrophobic material, it’s going to retain very little water.

In addition, you’ll find it’s also naturally mildew-resistant and UV-resistant. Some companies go even further and layer on a PU-coating to make it even more resistant against UV rays!

This is a less common material in awnings, but you’ll still occasionally see it used. Most are actually comprised of canvas with a coating of acrylic paint to make it tougher and resistant to rough weather. It’s naturally UV-resistant and also hydrophobic.

When it all comes down to it, durability should be at the forefront of your considerations, just like with any product which is going to be exposed to the elements.

Ideally, you’ll have a sturdy frame made with steel and/or aluminum which isn’t going to rust if it’s exposed to water. Our personal favorite for canopies is a thick polyester with a PU coating, as you essentially get double the toughness.

UV: Just about anything that’s exposed to UV rays over a prolonged period of time is going to start to break down. However, there are some materials which can take this better than others. Canopies are perfect for bringing in UV rays, as they project right out into the open.

If the material doesn’t hold up well enough, you can count on the fibers melting, fraying, or even tearing. Not only that, but the color will start to fade or bleach which doesn’t look good at all.

Mildew: This is also referring to the canopy, as metal isn’t going to be subject to mildew. Those made out of fabric are more susceptible to mildew, but there are ways to protect them. One of the most popular ways of doing so is by adding on a kind of coating, and others treat the canopy before it’s even woven so it’s protected on the interior and exterior.

best patio awnings

While there aren’t a ton of options available in terms of design, they still vary in color. Not only that, but you can choose between a more classic type of awning, or one like the TANG Sunshades, which are more flowy and gentle-looking.

Color is also important, as you want it to go well with your home’s paint, or the building you plan on attaching it to. Most only give you one or two options, but there are a couple that let you choose between more.

FAQs About Retractable Awnings

Q: Why not just go for a motorized retractable awning?

A: While these are definitely more convenient in many ways, they also have their downfalls. The main one being they are significantly more expensive.

Manual models are much more reliable, as all you need is to crank the handle to retract or extend it to your liking. They’re also much more durable in the elements.

Q: Can retractable awnings placed over my windows actually help keep my home cooler?

A: If properly installed, they’ve been shown to be able to keep decks/patios up to 20 degrees cooler. Not only that, but they help keep sun from blaring directly into your home which can leave you feeling more comfortable. Moreover, you can save money by not having the AC on all the time.

Q: Is it possible to install the awning on my own?

A: It’s possible, even if you have no prior DIY experience to speak of. The manufacturer will typically include an installation manual, step-by-step, so you can feel confident that it will be properly installed. Again, just make sure that you select the right size for the area you’re looking at.

Q: Do I have to remove the awning during the winter and keep it stowed away?

A: Nope! That’s the beauty of retractable awnings! Simply make sure it’s retracted completely, and it will be protected.

Tips For Using Your Awning

#1: If you find yourself working on your car a lot in the driveway, or performing other hobbies, try installing your awning over your garage.

These are also great if your garage is full of cars and you have to park your vehicle in the driveway, as it will help protect the paint from UV exposure.

#2: To keep your awning lasting as long as possible, make sure to regularly clean it.

Cleaning doesn’t have to be difficult, either. Simply brush the fabric while it’s already dry, and wash it with lukewarm water and a mild soap.

#3: To ensure maximum coverage throughout the day, make sure to use the arms to adjust it.

These will allow you to move the angle of the awning as the sun moves, so you never have to worry about the sun in your eyes!
