How to Choose the Best Kids Trampoline – Buying Guide
Traditionally, there are four shapes of trampolines to choose from round, square, rectangular, and octagonal. Most of the ones we’ve featured here are round as it is the most common shape.
The Acon Air 16 Sport is rectangular and is made more for older kids and even adults as the jumps are much higher. Round trampolines provide manageable jumps for kids and typically have a large mat surface to utilize.
Nearly all kids trampoline manufacturers will suggest having only one jumper on the mat at a time. This is so no one bumps into each other, causing injury. Larger trampolines can accommodate more jumpers but again, it isn’t recommended.
The size you choose will mostly have to do with the age of the kids jumping and what kind of jumps they want to do. If they will just be jumping vertically and moving around the mat slowly, a smaller size is usually fine.
If they want to perform trick jumps and play games, such as those with a basketball and hoop, a larger trampoline is necessary.
The maximum weight capacity is important. If your child is in the recommended age range, such as 3 to 6 years for the Little Tykes indoor trampoline, but they are over the weight limit of 55 pounds, you will need to start with a bigger and stronger kids trampoline such as the Lovely Snail 5-foot trampoline.
There are many different trampoline frame structures, so how do you choose? The most common type of trampoline frame legs is the “U-Shape”. Each “U” has two ground points, essentially functioning as 2 legs, but being connected they are much stronger.
These U-Shaped legs can go around the outside edge of a round trampoline or they can go from side to side, like the Acon Air 16 Sport. You may also see straight legs with rubber feet, like those on Sportspower’s My First Trampoline.
Springs should always be made of strong, durable steel that has been galvanized. If the springs wear out quickly, you may find yourself needing to replace them soon after your purchase. Much of the momentum during jumping is placed on the springs so they should be of the highest quality.
FAQs About Trampolines For Children
Have questions before you decide which kids trampoline is for you? We answer several popular questions about purchasing, as well as using, a trampoline for kids.
Q: Do I need a ladder for a kids trampoline?
A: The answer to this question depends on two things: how tall the mat of the trampoline is, and how tall the kids are. Having a ladder for any trampoline with a mat height of 28” or more is recommended. Even if the kids can get in and out of the trampoline without a ladder, using a ladder can help to prevent injuries.
Q: Do Nets make trampolines safer?
A: Many trampolines didn’t come with enclosures not that long ago, so why do nearly all of them have one now? It’s very easy for a jumper to lose sight of the mat when jumping and jump clear off of it, or they may end up landing on the springs or spring cover which can also cause severe injury.
The enclosure nets on new kids trampolines are designed not only to keep kids from jumping or falling off of the mat surface but also to keep them safely away from the springs.
Q: What is the recommended age?
A: The recommended age is different for each trampoline depending on its size, weight limit, and other features. The Lovely Snail trampoline is specifically designed for toddlers and small children, which larger trampolines like the Skywalker Jump N’ Dunk is large enough for kids ages 8 and up and may even be used until they reach the maximum weight limit. Rectangular trampolines like the Acon Air 16 Sport are meant for older teenagers that want more airtime.
Q: How do I take care of my kids’ trampoline so it lasts a long time?
A: It’s important to regularly check all nuts, bolts, and springs so you know they are secure. This isn’t just for safety, although that’s the biggest reason, but also because if the frame or enclosure poles shift during use, it can bend the structure will reduce its usable life.
If the trampoline will stay assembled through winter months, it is important to cover it so rain and snow don’t affect the mat, springs, or frame. If it won’t be used for a while, it is recommended to remove the enclosure net. During windy weather, secure the frame to the ground with anchors.
Q: Which brand of trampoline is the best?
A: In our opinion the Giantex is the best brand for trampolines. They have decades of experience and make a quality trampoline with all the safety features parents want.
Q: What is the best size trampoline?
A: This of course depends a lot on the available space you have. You should allow for at least 6 feet of clearance around the trampoline. If you have more than one child who want to use it at the same time, you will need a larger trampoline. A 12 foot trampoline should be sufficient for two kids at the same time. Keep in mind it can be dangerous having more than one child on at the same time due to the danger of collisions.
Q: How do you prepare the ground for a trampoline?
A: This video will give you some tips on how to prepare the ground for a trampoline.
Q: What are the benefits of a kids trampoline?
A: A kids trampoline helps to keep them active by giving them something fun to do that also happens to provide great exercise. An outdoor trampoline gives kids plenty of sunshine, and therefore Vitamin D, and it can also help get them out of the house and away from phones, tablets, computers, and televisions. Even indoor trampolines can help keep kids active during bad weather when they may not be able to go outside.
Tips For Using Children’s Trampolines
These tips won’t just help you choose the right trampoline for your kids, it will also help you get the most out of your purchase. With the following 5 tips, your kids will be enjoying their time by jump, jump, jumping in no time at all.
Tip #1: Choose the Right Place to Set Up a Kids Trampoline
It is important to keep in mind that kids will be jumping, and might jump pretty high. Make sure there is nothing above the trampoline for at least 25 feet to make sure kids are safe from overhead tree branches, power lines, etc.
You should also realize that if the trampoline is placed on grass, it will damage that grass over time. You may want to move the trampoline every so often to keep your grass healthy.
Tip #2: Look for Replacement Parts
All of the trampolines for kids we featured have replacement parts available. In a year, or two, or maybe even longer when you need to replace the mat or the net, you can purchase those replacement parts instead of having to buy a whole new trampoline.
This can save a lot of money in the future, making your original trampoline purchase even more convenient and valuable.
Tip #3: Practice Different Jumps
It’s important to get used to jumping on the trampoline before trying anything more. However, once your kids are comfortable with jumping, have them check out trampoline jumping tutorials on YouTube and other sites that will show them how to land on their back, their knees, or even all fours and land upright again.
Getting creative with jumps is one of the most fun features of jumping on a trampoline.
Tip #4: Look for Professional Assembly
If assembling a trampoline sounds more than a little daunting to you, or if you don’t have the help of a friend to make assembly easier, it might be worth it to seek professional assembly. Your purchase may offer an add-on of professional assembly or you may be able to find someone closer to home that has experience putting together trampolines for kids.
You won’t have to put it together and you will know someone who has the knowledge and tools to get the trampoline up and jumping quickly and safely.
Tip #5: Always Observe Kids Using a Trampoline
The number one rule of jumping on a trampoline is having an adult nearby to observe the activity. If kids get a little excited and start jumping too high or are jumping in a dangerous way, an adult needs to step in and calm it down.
Jumping on a trampoline should only ever be fun and injuries, even minor ones, are never fun. Always have an adult present when kids are using a trampoline.
