Platports Freestanding Backyard Slide

Platports Freestanding Backyard Wavy Slide at a Glance:

  • Type: Freestanding
  • Length: 10 feet
  • Weight Capacity: 110 pounds
  • Indoor Use: Yes

What should the best kids slide consist of? It should be safe, fun, durable, and versatile. That’s everything you’ll find here with the Platports Home Playground Equipment Indoor/Outdoor Wavy Slide.

As you can tell by the name, it can be used both inside and outside, so when temperatures start cooling down they don’t have to stop playing!

Designed for kids aged anywhere from 3 to 10 years old, you don’t have to worry about them outgrowing the slide quickly either. Or if you have more than one child, they can all play together.

The bright orange and neon green color scheme looks cool and will surely draw your child’s attention! Not only that, but it’s easy to see if it’s wet or dirty so you can clean it of before they get on it.

Including a stabilizing support bar, deep chute sides, smooth metal handrails, and wide steps, it’s made to facilitate climbing and the safety of little ones. If your child is just learning how to climb and go down the slide, this is an excellent choice for helping them develop this balance and coordination.

Aside from safety purposes, the slide is also built to last. The wear-and-tear children put into these kinds of playground toys is not a secret.

That’s why this model features a steel frame and a non-recycled plastic chute, finished off with a UV coating that keeps the color from fading and the structural integrity from being compromised.

Slidewhizzer Outdoor Kids Play Set

Slidewhizzer Outdoor Kids Play Set at a Glance:

Designed for kids age 3 to 10 years old, it’s great for getting in some exercise and will help children develop gross motor skills! Similar to the previous model, its bright colorway will only add to the fun factor!

Made with a solid steel frame and featuring a non-recycled plastic slide, it’s designed to be durable enough to last through years of use. It also comes with a UV-resistant coating to make sure the slide looks brand-new always!

Smooth handrails won’t catch on the skin, yet are stable enough that users can actually rely on them to help keep their balance. Exceeding ASTM safety standards, it’s just not something you have to worry about.

As it can be used both indoors and outdoors, this slide will be a year-round cornerstone in your child’s playthings. Not only that, but it’s great for moving indoors if you need to keep a particularly close eye on them.

Assembly was found to be easy and straightforward not only for us, but for just about everyone else who’s had the pleasure of setting this kit up for their kids. In fact, there’s even a YouTube video that leads you through it! With free replacement parts for a year, you can buy with peace of mind!

Lazy Buddy Freestanding Kid Slide Baby Play Climber at a Glance:

  • Type: Freestanding
  • Length: 55 inches
  • Weight Capacity: 110 pounds
  • Indoor Use: Yes

Are you on the hunt for the best playground slide for little ones? It’s hard to beat the Lazy Buddy Freestanding Kid Slide, if so. Not only is it the perfect slide for kids who weigh up to 110 pounds, but it also comes with an attached basketball hoop so one child can be sliding while the other shoots baskets!

Made out of thickened HDPE materials, it’s completely safe for children to use, and is also eco-friendly. The durable material is nice and smooth so it will never damage their skin, clothing, etc.

It’s great for use both indoors and outdoors, thanks to the lightweight yet tough composition that is also quite easy to move around should you ever need to.

Adults and children alike love the longer, wider slide that allow the children to slide naturally from the middle position. It makes it safer and easier to use, translating to less downtime and more playtime! The heightened handrail design only adds to this great level of stability while allowing them to develop their balance.

Assembly is super simple and quick, so you don’t have to deal with the hassle of spending an hour or two putting it together. We know that kids can be excited and get impatient! Really, all you need is 10 minutes and a coin or round tool to put it up!

Lastly, this is one of the most visually attractive slides out there, coming in two unique colors: a light turquoise and pink.

NE 3061 Super Speedwave Plastic Slide at a Glance:

  • Type: Combined with swing set / playset
  • Length: 8 feet
  • Weight Capacity: 250 pounds
  • Indoor Use: No

Hands-down one of the best outdoor slide manufacturers is the Swing n Slide Store. They make our next model: the NE 3061 Super Speedwave Plastic Slide which is ideal for 5 foot swing set decks. This means that it’s not standalone, but if you already have a deck/swing set that works with the height then it’s perfect!

Coming in either deep green or blue, all kids are sure to love how it looks just as much as how fun it is! Measuring out at around 8 feet long, it’s specifically made for only backyard residential use. Unfortunately, it’s not made for indoor use so keep that in mind when setting expectations.

The design comes in a wave, which offers a bit more excitement then just a straight shot slide would. The durable, thermoformed plastic is very tough and is fine if you live in an area that gets intense hot or cold temperatures. In fact, it’s capable of supporting up to 250 pounds so many adults would even be able to go down the slide with their small children!

The deep-set waves and wide side rails helps to prevent sagging while in use but also creates a safer environment for all riders! This is one of the most comfortable slides and for the price, it’s an excellent investment that your kids will be able to use for many years to come.

Ws 5032 Olympus Wave Slide 2 Piece Plastic Slide at a Glance:

  • Type: Combined with swing set / playset
  • Length: 10 feet
  • Weight Capacity: 250 pounds
  • Indoor Use: No

We’re back yet again with a slide from Swing n Slide; this time with their Ws 5032 Olympus Wave Slide 2-Piece Plastic Slide. There are quite a few similarities between this model and the previous one, but also some significant differences between them.

Perhaps the biggest difference is the fact that this one comes in a 2-piece design instead of a single piece. The scoop and wave plastic design is incredibly smooth and exciting – designed for high speeds and comfort.

As far as ages go, kids of just about any age can use this one, though we recommend it for children 5 and up. It can support up to 250 pounds, so even adults can partake in the fun!

The 2-piece model is incredibly convenient and relatively easy to set up. It is designed to mount onto 4’6” or 5’ platforms so keep this in mind when making your purchase. It is not a standalone slide.

The 2 pieces and included metal plates are there to help prevent sagging or bowling while in use, and it shows. When using the slide, it feels very safe and sturdy with no risk of cracking.

The durable plastic construction only helps with its toughness and will offer years of good times!

Swing n Slide 5 Ft Turbo Tube Slide at a Glance:

  • Type: Combined with swing set / playset
  • Length: 5 feet
  • Weight Capacity: 250 pounds
  • Indoor Use: No

Do you remember the best playground slide from your childhood? Chances are it was one of those cool tube slides! Mine definitely was – me and a couple of friends would somehow all manage to sit inside and use it as a “fort” when we weren’t actually using it for sliding!

The 5 Ft Turbo Tube Slide is just as fun and comes in either Blue or Green – both look as high-quality as the build, itself! Designed for backyard residential use, you do have to mount it to a 5’ platform to be able to use it. The fully enclosed slide offers an almost 360-degree turn, which creates various elements of entertainment.

Made with high-density polyethylene, the tube is thermo-formed and one of the toughest out there. Supporting up to 250 pounds, it’s great for all sizes and ages of children and parents will love taking their little ones down too!

This model will very likely last you more than 10 years of heavy use and throughout all types of weather conditions. Just remember that it’s only for outdoor use!

The US-made product is a bit more cumbersome and will take more time to assemble so we recommend getting a partner or buddy to help you out!

Swing n Slide Tunnel Twister 5′ Slide at a Glance:

  • Type: Combined with swing set / playset
  • Length: 5 feet
  • Weight Capacity: 250 pounds
  • Indoor Use: No

Last but not least, we bring you yet again another Swing n Slide Store model: the Tunnel Twister 5’ Slide. It’s very similar to the previous model, but doesn’t quite have the same layout with the near 360-degree twist the other offers. Instead, you get a twisty experience that kids are sure to love!

With two near-90-degree elbow turns, it’s a race to the bottom that they’ll be motivated to run to go down over and over again! With 8 plastic, pre-drilled slide pieces, assembly isn’t too difficult and comes with all necessary mounting hardware and instructions. Just remember that you need a 5-foot play deck or platform to mount it onto.

Supporting up to 250 pounds, the fully-enclosed design is incredibly durable and resistant to regular use and extreme weather conditions. It’s definitely one of the longest-lasting models on the market today – especially for the price it’s listed at.

While it’s not for indoor use, it’s perfectly safe throughout cold winter seasons and won’t burn your kids during the summertime.

We love it not only because just about anyone can use it, but because it’s also super safe. You don’t have to worry about your child accidentally falling off or out of it due to the enclosed tube.

How to Choose the Best Kids Slides  – Buying Guide

best outdoor slides
LAZY BUDDY Freestanding Kid Slide

When it comes to buying the right slide for children, you have a surprising amount of things to consider. It’s not just the one that “looks the coolest” or the cheapest one. We know things can get confusing, which is why we’re here to help!

We’ve decided to take it upon ourselves to write up the user-friendly buying guide for you. This guide below will take you through each consideration to take to make sure that you are 100% certain on the model for your family.

Age/Size Requirements

First things first: you need to take into consideration the age of the child(ren) using the slide. This matters not only because of the size of the child, but because of safety matters, and the gross motor skills they’ve developed so far.

Slides will generally have the age recommendations on each of their models. Some are much more lightweight and smaller and are clearly designed for toddlers and smaller kids while others are larger, require more balance/climbing skills, etc.

Types of Slides

Once you have the last point figured out, you’ll need to decide which type of slide to get. There are freestanding models and tubes.

Freestanding –  These are generally more affordable, and come in different sizes. Generally speaking, though, they’re basically straight down or straight with little waves. As they’re freestanding, you don’t have to worry about buying anything else.

Many times, they can be used both indoors and outdoors depending on the size, materials they’re made out of, and space you have available inside your home. This is great because if you live in an area that gets really cold, your kid(s) don’t have to stop playing – simply bring the fun inside!

Tube –  Tube slides are awesome because they offer more stimulation and are just downright cool. They have complete 360 coverage over the slide, which means you don’t have to worry about the kids falling off. Tubes are also nice if you have children of different ages playing as they support a wide range of sizes and weights of users.

Just remember that these are almost never freestanding so you’ll have to mount it onto a play deck or platform. If you aren’t much for DIY projects or assembly then you’ll want to either avoid this type or get someone to help you. Tubes are more time-resistant so you can plan on having the slide for many years to come.

outdoor slide vs turbo tube

The durability of a slide involves many factors. One, is obviously the material(s) it’s made out of. Recycled plastic is a popular one as it’s affordable, relatively eco-friendly, and also very tough. This toughness is resistant against kids’ shoes, toys, general wear-and-tear, along with various weather conditions so you can leave it outdoors year-round without worrying about it breaking down and the structural integrity being compromised.

If it’s a standalone slide, take a look at the frame, bars, and stairs. Usually, these will be made out of a type of metal – ideally, steel. Steel bars will typically get covered in paint and/or another material to keep it smooth against the skin. However, the downside of metal is that it does get cold and hot easily!

You not only have materials to consider regarding durability, though. Also look into how it’s constructed. Slides that come in multiple pieces tend to last longer as there are extra joints and/or metal plates that will help prevent bowing or sagging when in use, and over time.

Safety is our primary consideration in anything we purchase for our children. If they aren’t tube slides, try to find a slide that comes with deep sides for them to hold on to, or metal bars, etc. Also look at slides with wide, well-spaced steps so they can easily climb and are less likely to trip.

Weight Capacity

We already briefly covered this earlier up, but take into consideration the weight of the child or children who will be using the slide. 110 pounds is the maximum on many standalones, while 250 seems to be the standard for tube slides or others that must be mounted.

If you are planning on taking a child with you down the slide, then you’ll definitely want to go for the latter. Higher weight capacities also ensure that your kids can use the slide for years to come and won’t outgrow it!

Some slides come with fun little extras that only add to the value and entertainment factor of the model. Basketball hoops are fun ones, and make it so kids can take turns sliding and shooting hoops so they aren’t constantly waiting for someone else. It also keeps more kids entertained at once, in case you have neighbor kids, cousins, etc. coming over often.

Of course, price is also a factor in just about everything we buy! When it comes to slides, you typically get what you pay for. Unless it’s a toddler’s slide, if you’re going for the cheapest product, you’re probably going to get something that isn’t the safest nor the most durable.

If you can spend a bit more initially, you’ll probably end up saving money in the end as it will last you longer. With cheaper slides you’re just going to have to go out and get a new one soon anyway, so it’s better to just splurge a bit upfront to save cash and have the peace of mind that your kid is playing in a safe slide.

FAQs About Kids Slides

Q: What is the best material for slides?

A: Recycled plastic is probably the best material, due to how durable, safe, smooth, and relatively eco-friendly it is. Not to mention, it’s pretty affordable, too!

Q: What makes a slide slippery?

A: The slide itself is relatively slippery, but wax is what really brings the speed up! You can even take a piece of wax paper and rub it over the surface of the sliding area and you’ll notice a big difference!

Q: What is the best thing to put under a slide?

A: Playground mats are a good idea, if your yard/space allows for it! It will protect the ground underneath and are great for kids to play/fall on. However, you can also add mulch or bark at the bottom which offers a relatively “soft” surface for them to land.

Q: Can you put a slide on grass?

A: You definitely can! However, depending on how slippery the grass is, the slide may move around a bit. You’re probably better off placing a play mat on top of the grass in this case.

Q: Where should I put my slide in my yard?

A: You should put it somewhere in the shade to keep it out of the hot, direct sunlight. Keep it away from any potential hazards!

Tips For Choosing Kids Slides

#1: Try to plan ahead

Unless your children are still quite small, you’ll want a slide that they can continue using as they grow up! Kids grow up scarily fast, and slides can be expensive if you’re only using it for a year or two! Make sure the slide can physically accomodate your kid and any other children they’ll be playing with.

#2: Make sure to regularly inspect the slide.

Check to make sure that it’s clean, that there’s no twigs or debris stuck in it, and that all screws are properly tightened on the slide, mounting space, and stairs.

#3: If you live in an area that gets “seasons” then look for a model you can bring inside.

This way, when the weather gets gross, you can simply bring the slide inside and your kid(s) will still be able to get in some exercise and entertainment!

Now that you know just about everything you could ever want to some good kids slides, have you decided which model is right for your child(ren)? If not, there’s no need to worry. As long as you make sure the slide works with your child’s height/weight and your yard, then really any of the models from our guide is an excellent choice. Thanks for tuning in, and we’ll see you again soon!
