The Magneto Mini Cruiser Skateboard basically has it all. The short board is great for all ages, but works especially well if you either want a shorter board or, well…you’re short, yourself.

Made with Canadian maple, it’s durable and lightweight, keeping you rolling for years to come. Keeping consistent with the high quality, the trucks are made from gravity cast aluminum, and the wheels and bushings are cast in SHR polyurethane, so everything is made to last.

The double kick tails give you a bit more versatility and fun, and if you enjoy the more traditional skateboarding styles, will help facilitate that.

While you’ll probably notice it doesn’t have grip tape, it does actually have a sand grit finish on the top of the desk which will keep your feet in place.

No, we don’t recommend using it for street skating, given the style and lack of grip tape, however, it is good enough for heavy cruising, and getting from point A to point B in style.

We give the Magneto the thumbs up as the best skateboard for beginners!

How to Choose the Best Beginners Skateboard – Buying Guide

best skateboard for kids

Now that you’ve read through our reviews of each of the best skateboards for beginners, you may need a bit more direction to help you select the perfect one for you. Below, we have an in-depth buying guide to lead you along the path to success.

Style

Which style of board to you desire? Skateboards are generally used at the skatepark and doing tricks, but can also be used to ride around town. However, perhaps you just want one that is used for riding around, and nothing else.

If this is the case, you’ll probably want to go with a cruiser board which is designed for exactly that. It features generally a wider deck, with big, soft wheels that make for a smoother, more pleasant ride. As the wheels are bigger, you also don’t have to exert as much energy trying to get where you want to go.

Deck Materials

This will vary, depending on the type of skateboard you choose. Cruisers, as mentioned above, are going to feature wider decks. The pro-style decks are typically made of 7 plies of maple wood, but this will vary depending on quality/price.

Maple

Maple is an ideal wood type for pro-style skateboards, as it’s so flexible and durable, allowing it to be shaped with ease, without sacrificing strength. Maple decks are made from small plies, or sheets, and once they’re sealed together, actually create a stronger board than just a single plank.

Bamboo

An alternative deck material that is extremely lightweight and durable, but doesn’t give as much “pop” as maple, which is what you’ll want to pull off tricks, and be able to ollie higher. The concave shape of the pro-style decks also help with this, and to give you an edge to help grab onto during tricks.

Plastic

Plastic is, while not the standard, often used with cruisers. Typically, more inexpensive oens that aren’t necessarily made to last. Of course, this also depends on how hard you are on it, how much the rider weighs, etc. It does make for a very easy skateboard to carry around.

Fiberglass

Cruisers can also be made of wood, but you’ll often see them made of other materials, such as plastic or fiberglass. We definitely prefer fiberglass over plastic, in terms of functionality, durability, and even look. The material is lightweight, and very durable.

Deck Shape

Deck shape varies quite a bit, depending on your style and preferences.

Drop Through – is essentially a top mount that features a drop-in concave so you stand at a lower level than your trucks. This gives you a lower center of gravity, making it more stable and easier for freeriding/cruising.

Pintail – These are directional boards that have a flatter platform and slightly slimmer tail which accommodates their larger wheels. They’re excellent for beginners due to their stability and ease of maneuvering, perfect for those who want to cruise and carve.

Shortboard – This is the shortest type of board, and are made for getting air and performing tricks. They’re also commonly referred to as “pro-style” boards. If you want to get into street skating, this is the perfect selection.

Cruiser – These are the ones that typically have kicktails, but are made just for cruising around. The decks are often mid-length, and are maneuverable and versatile.

Trucks

beginner skateboard trucks
Magneto Mini Cruiser Skateboard

Trucks are the metal part of the complete board which hold the wheels onto the board. The most high-quality ones are made of aluminum, which is lightweight and sturdy enough to take a beating repeatedly.

You’ll often use this part to grind, and it also facilitates turning and maneuvering around/onto obstacles, so they’re extremely important. You must ensure that if you’re going to be rough with your board or be doing any tricks, that yours feature metal trucks.

You may also see that in long boards, trucks are often “dropped” into the board, which gives you a lower center of gravity while riding, making it much more stable and great for beginners or casual cruisers.

Bushings

Bushings are these tiny rubber pieces inside the trucks, which help with turning. They are typically made of polyurethane to provide durability, and let you turn with ease.

They do vary in hardness, and a harder bushing is going to make it more difficult to turn the board, but also more stable. Softer bushings let you maneuver easier, and are great for kids, but allow for a a bit less security.

Wheels

beginner skateboard wheels
Flybar Skate Cruiser Board

You’ll see that there are typically two kinds of wheels, from the models above. The most common type are those found in the pro-style boards, and are made of a hard polyurethane which absorb small vibrations and roll over pebbles, cracks, and so on, with ease.

These are ideal for more rough skating. If you’re just using it for cruising, you may choose a board with softer, larger wheels that are also quite durable, but aren’t going to absorb vibrations quite as well, and are not made for absorbing shock from landing tricks.

They are, however, great on rough surfaces. Harder wheels are harder to use if you’re going to be on rougher surfaces, so if you’ll be on pebbles or a rough road, then choose a softer wheel.

Bearings

beginner skateboard bearings
Flybar Skate Cruiser Board

The ball bearings go inside the skateboard wheels, and connect them to the trucks, too. They’re what essentially keep them spinning, which is obviously extremely important to how your experience is.

This is probably the part that varies the most, but the quality is still crucial, depending on what you plan on doing with your board. The good part is, that even the best skate bearings are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.

You’ll see that they have ABEC (American Bearing Manufacturers Association) ratings, which indicate the level of precision and durability. Ratings are only odd numbers, and they start with ABEC 1.

ABEC 1 – the most crude and least precise, however, they’re also the most long-lasting and cheapest.

ABEC 3 – These are the bearings you’ll find with those low-quality, cheap skateboards. They work well for just the act of skateboarding, however, will roll pretty slowly and won’t be very smooth.

ABEC 5 – These are kind of the “norm” in skateboarding, providing a good amount of speed, while still being at a reasonable price point.

ABEC 7 – These are very fast and smooth bearings, however, more expensive. If you’re very hard/aggressive on your skateboard, then you run the risk of damaging them.

ABEC 9 and higher bearings are pretty insane to use on a skateboard unless you’re using it for the sole purpose of going extremely fast. If the price isn’t expensive on these, don’t trust that they’re actually a true ABEC 9 rating.

Griptape

This is the black part that goes on the top of the deck. It is what is going to keep your feet in place, or give you the traction to be able to do tricks, while also keeping your feet from slipping off of your board. On cruisers, you often won’t find it, but some kind of textured surface instead.

FAQs For Kids & Beginner Skateboards

Q: Can I use a pro-style skateboard for cruising around town?

You absolutely can, but keep in mind that these boards are typically going to have smaller, harder wheels that don’t do as well on rough surfaces. This means you’ll have to be extra careful around cracks and possible obstacles.

Q: How long will my skateboard last?

This is going to depend greatly on what you use it for. If you’re going to use it for tricks, grinding, jumping, and all that, it could just last you for months. However, you can still do all of this and have it last for years. Again, it will all depend. Cruisers last for much longer, as the stress and impact it goes through is usually much less.

Q: Can these be used for children?

Absolutely. All of the skateboards on this list can be used just as well for children, as for adults.

Tips For Riding Your Skateboard

Tip #1: Always wear protective equipment

If you don’t want to use elbow and knee pads, then you should absolutely, without fault, be wearing a helmet each time you step onto your skateboard. All it takes is one slip, and you can run the risk of injuring yourself badly if you end up hitting your head. There’s nothing wrong with playing it safe.

Tip #2: Make sure to replace your bearings regularly

This will depend on how often and how you use your board. However, as we just mentioned, they’re easy and inexpensive to replace, and they can completely change your riding experience.

Tip #3: Make sure to keep your trucks properly tightened

Each time before riding, make sure they’re tight enough that the bolt doesn’t come off, while being loose enough that you can maneuver to your liking.

Final Thoughts

Now that you’ve read pretty much everything you need to know about the best skateboards for beginners, as well as what to look for in the perfect one for your needs, which one have you decided on? Make sure that before anything, you know what you’ll be using it for. Always wear protective equipment – especially a helmet.
