Brunswick Hockey Table

Another crowd favorite, is the Brunswick 7ft Air Hockey Table Windchill, which is an absolutely beautiful design with even more impressive gameplay.

The sleek black-and-white design will fit in with any already-existing décor you have in your home, thanks to the neutral colors and visually aesthetic appeal.

Considerations for Choosing an Air Hockey Table – Buying Guide

best full size air hockey table
Brunswick 7ft Air Hockey Table

Now that you’ve had the chance to read all about the best air hockey tables, which one would you like to place in your game room?

If you’re still unsure, it’s normal. There are many great options above, and they can be difficult to decide between.

That’s why we’ve decided to take it upon ourselves to write up the following comprehensive buying guide. By the time you’re finished reading through it, there will be no doubt which product you’re getting!

Type

As you saw from the products above, there are two main types of tables to choose from: freestanding tables and tabletop models.

Full size air hockey table vs table top

Freestanding

These are designed to imitate arcade-style tables in their construction and overall design. These are definitely less expensive than the ones you’d actually find in an arcade, and aren’t usually going to come with all the bright lights and sound effects.

However, there are a couple on our list that feature LED lights around the playing surface and some fun sound effects when you score.

These vary widely in terms of quality, price, and even size or player allowance. These are typically pretty heavy and can’t easily be moved around from place-to-place, but are made to be more stationary fixtures in your home. These are great for any level of player, and typically work well for kids and adults.

Tabletop

In contrast, tabletop versions are very portable and can easily be taken with you to someone else’s home or anywhere else you’d like to play. When you’re finished, storing it away is no issue as they’re very thin and can be placed in a closet or under a bed without issue.

They typically come with some kind of foam or rubber feet so they stay in place, while also making sure not to damage the surface they’re placed on.

Table Size

The size of your air hockey table really just tells you how much space you’re going to need kept free for the installation of the model. These sizes vary greatly, so it’s important to think about how big you’d like it to be, and also how many players you’d like to be able to play at the same time.

However, you’ll also want to take into consideration extra space for the clearance on both sides of the tables so that players don’t feel restrained or squished while playing. While it’s not a rule, larger tables cost more money.

Usually, you’re going to have a one vs. one setup, but there are bigger tables that even let you play 2 vs. 2 which can be a lot of fun. Let’s take a look at how length affects gameplay.

2 Feet (24 Inches): These are the smallest designs out there that are typically just going to be tabletop models. These are ideal for absolute beginners and children, and are generally very inexpensive. If you aren’t sure if you’re going to like air hockey and don’t want to invest a lot of money in it, this would be the ideal choice. If you have a very small home or are limited on space, this is also a nice alternative.

4-6 Feet (48 to 72 Inches): The vast majority of tables on the market today are going to fit into this category. These are ideal for in-home recreational gaming, as they can easily fit inside most rooms yet provide a large enough playing space for a full air hockey experience.

7-8 Feet (84 to 96 Inches): This category is where you’re going to find either arcade-style or professional-level air hockey tables, that are designed to give you the best experience possible. These can usually be used in actual tournaments or leagues and are often found in actual arcades. The build quality is the top of the top and made to last throughout excessive use for decades. Due to this, you’ll find that they’re quite expensive.

Materials

This goes hand-in-hand with our last point, talking about build quality. You want your new table to be made with strong components that can hold up to abuse. When you’re in the middle of an intense game, you may not be paying attention to the stress you’re placing on the table, so you want it to be tough.

Ideally, look for a model made of wood and/or aluminum. Both of these materials hold up for years, won’t dent, and are ideal for sports use. Not only that, but they’re very stable, so you won’t have to worry about it wiggling around or tipping over.

Legs

The legs of the table are crucial; that is, if we’re talking about freestanding models. The legs should be very sturdy, as they’re not only holding the entire tabletop’s weight, but also players who are leaning on its sides during the game.

Not only should they be made of wood or metal, but come with strong and safely-secured joints that don’t risk giving out.

Another huge factor in your playing experience is going to be leg levelers. There’s a chance you’re not going to have the table placed on a completely even surface, which can affect gameplay greatly.

Not only will it prevent the puck from moving smoothly and consistently but can give some players an advantage. By having leg levelers, you’re ensuring that every single game is fair and has a perfectly even playing surface.

Fans

One of the most important components in an air hockey table is the fan. The pucks float on an air cushion which is made by the air blown from the little holes on the playing surface.

That’s why it’s so smooth and doesn’t stick or stutter. You’ll want to look for blowers with at minimum, a rating of 110V. High-quality motors are made to operate quietly and will not risk overheating so it’s always reliable and won’t give out on you.

Rink Walls/Side Rails

These are the parts of the table that are going to take the most abuse, due to the players hitting the puck against them. If you see one made with just a wispy layer of laminated aluminum, you should know that these are probably going to dent quickly.

What you should look for is thick aluminum or occasionally nylon, which allow for excellent bounce to carry on with rapid gameplay. These are also much less likely to scratch or dent, so the table stays looking and performing its best.

Power

As you could see from the above products, you can choose from either battery-powered or electricity-powered models. Which is the best? That’s completely up to you and your needs!

Battery-Powered

These are generally going to be the smaller tables, and usually solely the tabletop models. Unfortunately, you will have to continue purchasing batteries every time it runs out of juice, which can be a hassle and an extra ding to your wallet. However, they are extremely portable as you don’t need an external power supply for it to work!

Plug-In Electric

These are the most reliable, as they provide gameplay so long as it’s plugged into a wall outlet. However, they’re not going to be portable and are usually much heavier, larger models. These types are often full-sized or professional tables, and will give you the most authentic experience. You also don’t have to worry about the batteries running out of power or having to purchase new ones.

Score Tracking

There are only two types of score tracking to choose from: electric and manual.

air hockey table scoring

Electronic: These are great because you don’t have to do literally anything except play the game, and it will display the score for you. With some, you can also choose a timer on gameplay or choose to end the game once it hits a certain score.

Manual: These are typically only found on cheaper tables, or those full-size tables that are more budget-friendly. Most of the time, these are going to come in a type of abacus form. The downside to these is that it’s easy to get carried away and forget to mark the score correctly.

FAQs About Air Hockey Tables

Q: Does the size of the puck really matter?

A: Small puck tables are made more for children who want to play recreationally, and large puck systems are made to be more heavy-duty and offer a more authentic gaming experience.

Q: How large is a regulation-size air hockey table?

A: While there are many manufacturers out there that claim their products are regulation-size, the true size is 99 1/2 ” x 51 ¼” x 31”.

Q: How long should assembly take me?

A: This will of course depend on the type of model you select. For tabletop models it shouldn’t take you any longer than 5 minutes. For large models, they usually come already-assembled as they’re so large and cumbersome.

Tips For Maintaining Your Air Hockey Table

#1: To make sure your table lasts a long time, make sure to properly maintain it.

Ensure you’re cleaning your table at least once a week by using alcohol on a clean cloth or paper towel. Make sure you’re never using silicone or wax, as these types of materials can easily clog up the holes in the playing surface and essentially ruin your table.

#2: To make your table slide better, try waxing and cleaning the table, pushers, and pucks.

In addition, try to clean the blower of the fan to make sure it’s operating at full force. Also make sure that when your table is not in use, you’re covering it to prevent any dust and grime from building up.

#3: When your table isn’t in use, remove the batteries.

Leaving alkaline batteries in the table for long periods of time will cause them to corrode and possible ruin your table.
